Top players in the hospitality industry need well-trained staff, period. In fact, guests expect it.
With the help of modern day Learning Management System (LMS) technology, many of them have created online hubs where staff members can stay up to date on every single news, procedures, policies, and skills to deliver the best guest experience bar none.
We review many corporate training programs and the LMS systems behind them, but none have impressed us as much as Marriott®’s Global Source (MGS) implementation of it.
As the title says, in our opinion, we consider them to be the leader when it comes to hospitality training, career development, and educational material for their employees and staff member.
However, IHG®’s MERLIN and Extended Stay®’s University are just a few additional examples of top hotel chains that have embraced online learning to an unprecedented level that will truly help their employees get the the best support to excel at work.
Employees know that organizations that offer resources to train and grow on the job will help them develop into leaders of tomorrow in the hospitality business. Something that is becoming a critical point when deciding on one’s career choices.
Time and time again, when one enters a hotel, the first impression is the people. In fact, if it wasn’t for people, hotels would only be rooms without much else to differentiate one brand to another. This is why having well trained personnel is so important regardless of which chain of hotels or motels you work for, be it Motel 6® or a Hilton®.
And when it comes to a hotel chain’s associates and franchisees, they know that if they are given the resources to grow they will, in turn, be better able to take care of their customers around the world regardless of which branch they stay in. The guest experience will always be the same and on point.
Training sites such as that of Marriott®’s MGS, Hilton®’s the Lobby, and Hyatt®’s hyattconnect were set up with their employees, franchisees and associates in mind. It is designed to offer one with continuing training so that you can develop your skills, achieve your ambitions, scale up the corporate ladder, and keep up with the exciting innovations and changes in the hospitality industry.
There is a firm belief in the hospitality industry that, if you are satisfied with your job, then so will the guests with their stay.
This point of view ties in well with many of the industry’s core philosophy. That one should always be known to put people first, to embrace change, and seek excellence in everything one does. Corporate programs such as these will help anyone that wants to, to exceed in every aspect of the services provided.
What Should You Expect From An Employee Portal
Put it simply, the portal is an online destination to become the best at what you were hired to do.
To name a few, Accor®, Extended Stay America®, and Marriott® extranet portal, are all examples of a digital gateway, to give their staff access to a variety of hospitality learning resources. These resources include digital material, training modules, and video courses.
There are a variety of online education and certification programs available at all levels, but the best ones, like the one reviewed here will have comprehensive programs both at the senior management level or line level staff.
But at the very least, what you should expect from a quality portal are the following:
- Department specific certifications
- Training on guest communication, verbal and written
- Improved practical skills, such as CPR Instructions from the American Red Cross.
- Emergency management skills to develop sound judgment during disasters and emergencies.
- Hospitality supervisor certifications in time management, leadership and communication skills
- Hospitality sales professionals can learn and update effective revenue management and marketing skills
- Revenue managers will benefit from management expertise as well as forecasting techniques
- Executives in the Food and Beverage, Housekeeping and Facilities departments can seek prestigious certifications as department heads
- General Managers and hospitality executives can seek certification in Hotel Administration as proof of their high levels of expertise, experience and dedication
These are only a few of the areas one should expect to help grow in their knowledge, training, and skills. And the believe the MGS delivers in flying colors.
Many of these programs also include learning centered around company culture and corporate responsibility. Each corporation has their own belief that the way they do business is as important as the business they do. This translates into the responsibility they take for their environment and the communities they do business in.
They encourage their team members, associates, and franchisees to integrate a similar responsible hotel management, ethical behavior and community engagement into their own work ethics. One can find out more about it in more detail in the digital material and training programs available on their enterprise portal.
Easy Access Means Frequent Access To The Company Homepage
Each company has their own webpage URL. For example, one can access the Marriott® MGS homepage through the www.mgs.marriott.com, Hyatt®’s at www.hyattconnect.com, Extended Stay®’s at www.eshuniversity.com, and so on.
But if a company site’s is a hassle to get into and find via a cumbersome backend portal, then so will the friction to actually use the site. Luckily the hotel reviewed in this page does a clean and clear deployment of the access page to help remove any resistance for users to login to their profile online.
They cover both main points perfectly, such as:
- Like with many gateways, to enter, one would have to use their your own login credentials, which is something that is provided by the employer. If you forgot your password, you can either reset it using a link or ask for help from a personnel manager. Simple and clear.
- Depending on the company and if it was designed as a single point of entry, it should allow access to any and all department users. Such as from Canada, North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia, and other international countries where the company has a presence in. This allows all associates, team members, franchisees, vendors, consultants, or Contractors, a one stop shop when needing company support and training. Again, well done.
Benefits Of Using These Training Hubs
It’s not new knowledge that employees and franchisees, in every service industry, can benefit from continuing education. While the hospitality industry has typically always employed an old-fashioned approach to human resource management, they think it’s time to make a change.
The new innovations, constantly changing landscapes, shifting trends and changing expectations of guests in the hospitality industry mean that they must always strive to be aware and ahead of the game.
As a staff member, you can keep pace, improve your knowledge, share your experiences with others and grow into new levels of efficiency and expertise if you have access to the best literature and programs. These will help you be exceptional in your field, and never complacent. Additionally, you are able to access all the Human Resources services in one place.
It is the aim of every one of these training hubs to help you be exceptional. It doesn’t matter if the hub is called IHG® MERLIN, or Extended Stay® University, or Hyatt®’s hyattconnect. They all serve the same purpose… you. But it is in our opinion that the MGS (Marriott® Global Source) is without a doubt the best executed hub in the space.
To truly understand the importance of the above benefits though, one should take the time to access it often and watch as many course videos provided to you. Only then will you appreciate the technology, educational materials, training, and investment, put into it.
